Our training programme is designed to take into account each students individual level of fitness and flexibility. You will never be compared to another student - the essence of our philosophy is progressive and individual self improvement.
Although not for everyone, many of the students of Sumners Taekwon-Do enjoy the thrill and excitement of pitting their skills against others in Taekwon-Do competitions. It is important to understand that students are never forced into competing.
Not only do many students find competing fun, they also discover that it is a great confidence builder and an opportunity to make friends not only throughout Britain but also abroad. Our students have built up an enviable reputation on the competition circuit and over the years we have had many British Champions as well as nine European and eight World Champions!
We believe that traditional martial arts should be structured and disciplined but above all lots of fun. Our members enjoy not only a friendly but challenging training environment, they also have a very active social side to the club including summer camps, skittles evenings, barbecues and a host of other social events.

Self confidence comes from an individual facing seemingly difficult situations and overcoming them. Our system of taking regular grading tests is proven to help overcome lack of confidence, gradually building a student's self esteem and confidence.
Regular training in Taekwon-Do sharpens the physical reflexes, mental agility and concentration. This has been proven to aid not only a student's personal safety but also their ability to concentrate (and therefore succeed) in both educational and working environments.
In our busy, modern society, stress has become a major contributor to our nation's ill health. The focus and concentration, which as a student you will gradually develop, has two distinct advantages to help alleviate the stress we all face from time to time - firstly, whilst training, you will be able to concentrate to such a level that you will be able to "block out" the everyday stresses providing temporary respite and "re-charge" your emotional batteries. Secondly as your confidence and mental strength continue to develop, you will find it increasingly easy to cope with everyday stress.
Have you ever wondered why most of the people we regard as physically capable or "hard" rarely, if ever, have to resort to physical violence? Many people believe this is because of the individual's "reputation". In reality this rarely has anything to do with the situation - put this same person in an environment where he/she is not known and they still will not be "picked on". The real reason is that individual's self confidence - it is a well known fact that a bully tends to pick on "obvious victims"- people that display physical signs of timidness (looking frightened or unsure and subconsciously displaying signs of weakness in their body language).
As your training in Taekwon-Do progresses, your ability to deal with physically threatening situations increases and as a result of this your confidence in dealing with these situations also increases. This results in you no longer subconsciously acting as a victim! In fact, most competent martial artists never find it necessary to resort to physical violence.
